What is the Foreign Language Transcription Rules?
Standard rules established by South Korea's National Institute of Korean Language for how to write foreign language sounds in Hangul. For Japanese, the rules include not only a correspondence table between kana and Hangul, but also how to distinguish between initial and medial positions and how to handle long vowels.
Why do initial k and t sounds (か行・た行) become 가・다?
Korean plain stops (ㄱ・ㄷ) sound like 'ka' and 'ta' to Japanese speakers in initial position, but become voiced like 'ga' and 'da' in medial position. Following this perception, Japanese 'ka' and 'ta' are written as 가・다 initially and 카・타 in medial position.
Why long vowels aren't written and alternative spellings you might see
The Foreign Language Transcription Rules specify that long vowels are not written, so 'ゆうこ' becomes '유코' and 'さいとう' becomes '사이토'. Spellings like '유우코' and initial 카・타 that you might see online are non-standard variations, and this tool uses the standard form consistently.
