Basic Knowledge
Difference Between Character Count and Byte Count
Character count refers to the number of characters as they appear, while byte count refers to the amount of data on a computer. For the same text, the byte count varies depending on the character encoding.
- With UTF-8：In UTF-8, alphanumeric characters are counted as 1 byte each, while hiragana and kanji are typically counted as 3 bytes per character.
- With Shift_JIS：In Shift_JIS, Japanese characters are counted as 2 bytes each, so the total byte count is smaller than UTF-8 for the same text.
Do Spaces and Line Breaks Count Toward Character Count?
Character count can be calculated in two ways: including or excluding spaces and line breaks. Which method to use depends on the requirements specified in application guidelines or report specifications.
How to Count Manuscript Page Equivalents
Manuscript page equivalent refers to converting the amount of text into the number of standard manuscript pages (400 characters per page, 20 characters × 20 lines). There are two counting methods: one that counts line breaks as consuming space, and one that divides the pure character count by 400, which can result in different page counts for the same text.

Add count history to character counter
When you press 'Save to history', up to the latest 20 entries are saved with the 12 metrics at that time and an excerpt from the beginning of the input. You can review previous counts even after counting a new text.

Character count now shows manuscript page count with both line-based and character-based calculations
Line-based calculation: 1 page = 20 characters × 20 lines. Character-based calculation: 1 page = 400 characters. You can check the calculation method from the explanation button on each line.
