117 is a time announcement service number in Japan that provides the current time by voice when called from a landline. It announces the time every 10 seconds, and a time signal sound immediately after indicates the second mark precisely.
- Why seconds are announced：For setting clocks, minute information alone is insufficient, so 117 uses audio to mark the exact second.
- Difference from audio reading：Browser text-to-speech has a slight delay before speaking, making it unsuitable for second-precise timing.
Why computer and smartphone clocks drift
