How Time Zones Work (UTC Offset)
Each region's time is determined by its offset (advance or delay) from UTC, the world standard reference time. Japan is expressed as UTC+9, New York as UTC−5 (UTC−4 during daylight saving time), and the difference in offsets between two locations becomes the time difference.
What is Daylight Saving Time
Daylight saving time is a system where clocks are advanced by 1 hour during seasons with longer daylight, and is adopted in many regions in Europe and North America. On the switching date, the time difference can change by 1 hour even in the same city, so care is needed when coordinating times for international meetings.
