Basic Knowledge

How to solve proportions

In a proportion of the form A:B = C:D, the product of the inner terms (B×C) always equals the product of the outer terms (A×D). Using this relationship, if three of the four numbers are known, the remaining one can be found with the formula: product of diagonal numbers ÷ remaining number.

How to simplify ratios

To reduce a ratio to its simplest integer form, divide both numbers by their greatest common divisor. Since the GCD of 1920 and 1080 is 120, dividing both by 120 gives 16:9.

Difference between ratio, proportion, and percentage

  • Ratio (A:B)A ratio expresses the relationship between two quantities as "16:9". Multiplying or dividing both sides by the same number preserves the relationship.
  • ProportionProportion is the value itself showing the size of one quantity relative to another, expressed as a decimal without units, like 1080÷1920 = 0.5625.
  • PercentagePercentage is a unit expressing proportion when the base quantity is 100. For 0.5625, it's written as 56.25% with the % symbol.
