Basic Knowledge
Ascending and Descending Order
Ascending order arranges items from smallest to largest (A→Z, 0→9, etc.), while descending order is the reverse. When sorting a list of numbers as text, "10" appears before "2", which differs from numerical sorting. Use numerical sorting for numeric values to get the expected results.
Why Kanji Sorting Doesn't Follow Alphabetical Order
Sorting is based on character collation rules. Hiragana and Katakana are generally sorted in alphabetical order, but Kanji characters lack phonetic information, so they don't sort by reading order. To sort names or place names alphabetically, create a column with their phonetic readings and sort by that column.
