Knowledge

What is basal metabolic rate?

Basal metabolic rate is the amount of energy your body consumes at rest to maintain life functions such as body temperature, breathing, and heartbeat. It is expressed in kilocalories per day (kcal/day) and varies by sex, age, and body composition.

  • Difference from daily energy expenditure:Daily energy expenditure is the basal metabolic rate plus energy consumed from physical activity and digestion. It is higher than basal metabolic rate for people with higher activity levels.

Harris-Benedict equation (revised version) calculation formula

The Harris-Benedict equation (revised version) is a basal metabolic rate estimation formula revised in 1984. It is calculated by multiplying weight (kg), height (cm), and age by sex-specific coefficients.

  • Formula for males:Male basal metabolic rate is calculated as: 88.362 + 13.397 × weight + 4.799 × height − 5.677 × age
  • Formula for females:Female basal metabolic rate is calculated as: 447.593 + 9.247 × weight + 3.098 × height − 4.330 × age

Why do results differ between sites?

Basal metabolic rate calculations differ between sites because different estimation formulas are used. For example, for a 30-year-old male who is 170 cm and weighs 65 kg, the Harris-Benedict equation (revised version) yields approximately 1,605 kcal, while the Mifflin-St Jeor equation yields approximately 1,568 kcal.

  • Difference between estimated and actual values:Estimation formulas are based on average relationships from measurement data of many people, so actual basal metabolic rate may differ for people with more or less muscle mass.
