Basic Knowledge
What is a base (N-base number)?
A base is the number of digits that can be used in one digit place. In base N, numbers are represented using N types of digits from 0 to N−1, and the value increases by a factor of N with each higher digit place. For example, 255 in decimal is 11111111 in binary and FF in hexadecimal.
- Why base 36 is the upper limit:To represent values of 10 or more with a single digit, letters A through Z are assigned in order. Since there are 10 digits and 26 letters, base 36 (where Z represents 35) is the general upper limit of notation.
Meaning of prefixes 0b, 0o, 0x
0b, 0o, and 0x are symbols added to the beginning of numbers in programming languages to indicate what base the number is written in.
- 0b (binary):0b is a prefix taken from the first letter of binary. 0b1010 represents 10 in decimal.
- 0o (octal):0o is a prefix taken from the first letter of octal. 0o17 represents 15 in decimal.
- 0x (hexadecimal):0x is a prefix derived from hexadecimal. 0xFF represents 255 in decimal.
How to express negative numbers
Negative numbers are expressed in two ways: signed notation with a minus sign (−) at the beginning, and two's complement notation where they are expressed within a fixed number of bits.
- Signed notation:In signed notation, negative numbers like −255 are written with a sign before the positive representation: −11111111 in binary or −FF in hexadecimal.
- Two's complement:Two's complement is the method computers use internally to handle negative numbers. In 8-bit two's complement, −1 is 11111111, so the same bit pattern has a different meaning than in signed notation.
