YouTube thumbnail resolutions and sizes
For each video, YouTube provides multiple thumbnail images of different sizes, available at URLs in the form "https://img.youtube.com/vi/VIDEO_ID/RESOLUTION_NAME.jpg".
- maxresdefault：maxresdefault is the largest thumbnail at 1280x720 (16:9), available for videos uploaded in high resolution.
- hqdefault：hqdefault is a 480x360 (4:3) thumbnail; for 16:9 videos, it will have black bars above and below the image.
- default：default is the smallest thumbnail at 120x90, a reduced-size image used in listings and similar contexts.
Why maxresdefault may not display
maxresdefault may not be generated for videos uploaded in low resolution or older videos, in which case opening the URL shows a 120x90 gray placeholder image instead.
- Resolutions to use instead：For videos without a maximum resolution thumbnail, use the next largest option: sddefault (640x480) or hqdefault (480x360).
Notes on using thumbnail images
The copyright for a YouTube thumbnail generally belongs to the rights holder, such as the video's uploader.
- For other people's videos：Before using someone else's video thumbnail in an article or document, make sure you have the rights holder's permission or that your use meets the conditions for fair use quotation.
