Knowledge Base
WordPress themes and child themes
A WordPress theme is a set of files that determines how a website looks, placed as folders under wp-content/themes.
- Child theme:A child theme inherits the design and functionality of a parent theme while overriding only parts of it. The parent theme folder name is specified in style.css under 'Template:'.
- Theme name and folder name:Theme name is the display name in style.css under 'Theme Name:' and is separate from the folder name (e.g., cocoon-child-master), so they may not match.
Why can themes and plugins be detected from HTML?
WordPress pages load CSS and JavaScript from paths like /wp-content/themes/folder-name/ and /wp-content/plugins/folder-name/, so folder names appear in the HTML.
- When detection fails:Plugins that don't output loaded files in HTML, or sites that change the location or name of wp-content, cannot be detected externally.
Why server provider estimation can be wrong
Server provider estimation is based on whether the reverse DNS hostname of the connection IP address (e.g., sv12345.xserver.jp) ends with the provider's domain, so servers without reverse DNS configured cannot be identified.
- Sites using CDN:Sites routed through CDNs like Cloudflare show the CDN's IP address externally, so the actual server provider cannot be determined.
Safety and Privacy
Server-side processing
Input is processed on the server; only information necessary for the inquiry is sent.
Temporary processing only
For WordPress theme detection, temporary processing occurs on the server, then data is discarded after results are returned.
Communications encrypted with HTTPS
All sent and received data is encrypted by TLS and cannot be read by third parties.
No transmission to third parties
Input content is not sent to external services such as ad networks or trackers.
Query only the input site and DNS
Retrieves the page and theme's style.css, uses DNS only for reverse lookup, and does not send data to detection services
