Basic knowledge

What is HTML source code?

HTML source code is text that describes a webpage's headings, body text, and image positions using tags like h1 (heading) and p (paragraph). The browser reads this to render the page.

  • head element:The head element contains the page title (title), descriptions used in search results and social media (meta), and specifications for loading CSS and JavaScript.
  • Character encoding declaration:Character encoding is declared using the charset attribute in a meta tag (e.g., charset="UTF-8"). If the declaration and actual encoding don't match, the page will display with garbled characters.

How to view page source in a browser

In Chrome or Edge on desktop, right-click on the page and select "View page source," or press Ctrl+U on Windows or Command+Option+U on Mac to display the source.

  • On smartphone:Most smartphone browsers don't have a "View page source" menu, so using a web tool that retrieves source by entering a URL is convenient.

Difference between source and inspector HTML

"Page source" is the HTML originally returned by the server, while the HTML displayed in the browser's inspector (developer tools) is the state after JavaScript execution has modified it.

  • Elements not displayed:Ads and lists added later by JavaScript are not included in the HTML returned by the server, so they won't be found when viewing the source.

Safety and privacy

Server-side processing

Input is processed on the server; only information necessary for the inquiry is sent.

Temporary processing only

For Retrieve page source, temporary processing occurs on the server, then data is discarded after results are returned.

Communications encrypted with HTTPS

All sent and received data is encrypted by TLS and cannot be read by third parties.

No transmission to third parties

Input content is not sent to external services such as ad networks or trackers.

Retrieve only the requested page URL

Retrieved source is displayed as text on the screen without executing scripts, and private URLs such as internal networks are not retrieved
