Knowledge Base

What is HEIC?

HEIC (HEIF) is the standard image format used by iPhone for camera photos. It can store photos at about half the file size of JPG while maintaining the same appearance. Files use the extension ".heic" or ".heif".

Why HEIC Won't Open on Windows

HEIC uses HEVC (H.265) compression, which requires compatible components to display the image.

  • Windows:Windows doesn't include HEVC components by default, so you may need to install additional extensions to view HEIC files in the Photos app.
  • Web Services:Many browsers and upload forms don't support HEIC, so some services limit uploads to JPG or PNG formats.

Choose Between JPG and PNG for Conversion

  • JPG:JPG is a space-efficient format. Converting from HEIC at around 80% quality maintains appearance while keeping file size low.
  • PNG:PNG is a lossless format, but photos become several times larger than JPG. It's better for files that need further editing.
