Knowledge Base
What is the reflex speed test (ruler drop)?
The ruler drop test measures reaction speed by catching a ruler dropped by a partner and calculating speed from the distance it fell before being caught.
- How this tool measures:This tool measures in milliseconds the time from when the stick starts falling until you tap, then converts it to the distance a real ruler would fall.
Formula to calculate reaction time from fall distance
Since the ruler undergoes free fall, fall distance (cm) is calculated as 0.5×980.665×reaction time (seconds) squared.
- Example conversion from reaction time:If reaction time is 0.2 seconds, fall distance is about 19.6cm; at 0.25 seconds, about 30.6cm—slight delays create much larger distances.
- Calculate reaction time from distance:To find reaction time from fall distance, take the square root of double the distance (cm) divided by 980.665 to get seconds.
Average reaction time and animal benchmarks
Reaction time to respond to a screen signal is generally 0.2–0.3 seconds for humans; this tool displays 250ms as human average.
- Animal rating benchmarks:Animal ratings are guides for fun: 150ms or less is Fly level, 200ms or less is Cat level, 240ms or less is Dog level, 280ms or less is Human level, 350ms or less is Turtle level, and slower is Sloth level.
- Ways to improve reflex speed:Reaction time may improve with adequate sleep, regular sports requiring quick responses to cues, and repeated practice with this test.
