Basic Knowledge
What is Morse code
Morse code is a communication method that represents characters using combinations of short sounds (dots) and long sounds (dashes). For example, the letter A in the alphabet is represented as "·−" and E as "·".
- Western Morse code:Western Morse code is an internationally standardized code representing 26 letters of the alphabet, numbers, and symbols, as defined by the international standard ITU-R M.1677-1.
- Japanese Morse code:Japanese Morse code is a uniquely Japanese code representing 48 kana sounds of the Iroha and voiced sounds, semi-voiced sounds, and long vowels. Although using the same "·−", it represents the letter A in Western code but the sound "i" in Japanese code.
Why SOS becomes "···−−−···"
SOS was chosen as an international distress signal because of its easy-to-remember and hard-to-mistake pattern of 3 dots, 3 dashes, and 3 dots, and is not an abbreviation for "Save Our Ship" or similar. In actual distress signals, characters are sent continuously without gaps as a single code.
Rules for separating characters and words
The length of Morse code is determined using one dot as a unit, and the length ratio remains the same regardless of the speed of transmission.
- Code length:A dash is three times the length of a dot, and within a single character, there is a silent gap of one dot length between dots and dashes.
- Between characters and words:There is a silent gap of 3 dot lengths between characters and 7 dot lengths between words. When writing in characters, it is common to separate characters with spaces and words with "/".
- Speed unit WPM:WPM refers to the number of words transmitted per minute. Using "PARIS" as the standard for one word, the length of one dot is 1200÷WPM milliseconds, which is 80 milliseconds at 15 WPM.
