Background knowledge

Why does each person get exactly one result?

A ladder lottery works by a simple rule: descend a vertical line, and each time you hit a horizontal line, move to the neighboring vertical line. Since each horizontal line swaps only two vertical lines, every participant reaches a different result.

  • Repeated swapsEach horizontal line is a swap of two vertical lines, and no matter how many are stacked, the one-to-one correspondence remains.
  • The same result tracing backwardsTracing upward from a result always returns to the original participant, so outcomes never duplicate or disappear.

Origin and names of ladder lottery

Ladder lottery originally used lines radiating from the center for each participant, and the shape resembled the halo of Amitabha Buddha, which gave it its name. The ladder-like shape seen today became popular later.

  • Ladder-like shapeThe current form with vertical and horizontal lines is easier to draw as the number of people increases and better hides results.
  • Names in EnglishIn English-speaking regions, it is sometimes called "ladder lottery" or "ghost leg".
