Basic knowledge
Why each result is uniquely determined
A lattice lottery works by a simple rule: descend a vertical line and move to an adjacent vertical line whenever you encounter a horizontal line. Since each horizontal line merely swaps two vertical lines, every participant arrives at a distinct result.
- Repeated swaps:Each horizontal line swaps two vertical lines, and no matter how many are layered, the one-to-one correspondence remains intact.
- Traced backwards yields the same path:Tracing upward from a result always returns to the original participant, so outcomes neither duplicate nor disappear.
Origin and names of lattice lotteries
Lattice lotteries historically featured lines radiating from the center for each participant, resembling the halo of Amitabha Buddha (Amida Nyorai), which inspired the name. The ladder-like form seen today developed later.
- Ladder-like form:The current vertical-and-horizontal arrangement is easier to draw with more participants and easier to conceal results.
- English terminology:In English-speaking regions it is sometimes called "ladder lottery" or "ghost leg," likening it to a ladder.
